do-it-yourself filming
Without treadmill

Initial Set-Up:

Required items:
  1. CONTRASTING COLOR RUNNING CLOTHES. Shorts and shirtless (or sports bra) preferred.
  2. RUNNING SHOES. Run in the shoes you wear most often.
  3. VIDEO CAMERA. Slow motion capability preferred, iPhone or Android work great.
  4. TRIPOD or a friend to hold the camera steady
  5. POSITION MARKERS. Cones, colored disks, shoes, or water bottles. This can be anything but must be clearly visible from up to 40 yards away.
LIGHTING
  • Make sure there are no extremely bright lights facing the camera. Avoid direct sunlight facing the camera that could result in lens flares or anything that could disrupt the camera view.
  • Make sure the runner is well-lit but not crossing in and out of shadowy areas.
CLOTHING
  • Wear shorts that DO NOT cover the knees and please tuck in your shirt (shirtless is best)
  • Reminder, shirt and shorts should be contrasting colors, e.g. black shorts & white shirt.

Range of motion videos / pictures + gait filming instructions:

RANGE-OF-MOTION VIDEOS & FOOT PICTURES:
Perform Barefoot
  1. Take pictures of both feet Front | Back
  2. Take ONE full video of each the following movements. One from the FRONT and from the SIDE:

    2.  Turn feet outward and inward
    3. Walk in place on your heels Front | Side
    4. Walk in place on your toes Front | Side
    5. Squat two times as far down as you can go comfortably Front | Side
    6. Squat on your right leg two times slowly, then your left leg two times slowly Front | Side

GAIT FILMING INFORMATION:
SETUP:

Do not use external applications on your phone (like Coach’s Eye or other apps). This can cause a lot of headaches during the upload process. We recommend using the standard recording feature on your phone and exporting it to your Dropbox folder.

Using a tripod is ideal for video capture, but a friend with a steady hand can work if necessary. Be sure the camera is lined up exactly perpendicular to the runner during each filming session. A slightly angled video will DRASTICALLY affect the video and skew our findings.

Running speed should be a pace that is somewhat difficult to maintain for long periods (if you are currently a runner, think 5K race pace). The faster you run (not sprinting, but running at a somewhat challenging speed) will make your biomechanical issues easier for us to spot. If you only get pain or problems running after a certain distance, we recommend you upload videos of “fresh” symptom-free running, in addition to one extra set of videos (no barefoot necessary for this set) of you running fatigued (ideally just before, or as, your symptoms begin to set in).

Clear a running lane at least ~40-yards long and a space in the middle approximately 8 yards wide.

  1. Level a camera at the height of the runner’s mid-thigh in a well-list flat space.
    Example 1 | Example 2
  2. Put a cone or marker at the ends of the lane to mark the length of the lane (40 yards)
  3. Put cones in the middle, approximately 20-yards, to make the width of the lane. The faster you run, the longer running lane you’ll need. The goal is to run at a steady state during the filming portion.
  4. In the middle of the running lane, exactly perpendicular to the running lane, set the camera or camera operator approximately 8 yards to the side
VIDEO
  1. If you have slow motion capability on your camera, please film in this mode for the following 12 videos.
  2. Run back and forth in front of a stationary camera three times in each direction:
    LEFT | RIGHT | FRONT | BACK
